Gill Golding

I’m a Visiting Research Fellow within the Centre for Urban and Community Research at Goldsmiths, University of London, Education Director of the Urban Photographers Association, Organiser of the International Urban Photography Summer School and the Competition Organiser for UrbanPhotoFest. These roles allow me to engage with a broad range of discourses about the visual representation of cities and to promote excellence in urban photographic practice, research and education.
My visual research interests lie in the field of post-industrial cities, particularly with an emphasis on regeneration, gentrification, sustainability and more recently, the hyperreal. My choice of walking as a research methodology allows me to encounter landscapes through an embodied practice, thus enabling a plurality of perspectives to become visible which provokes a critical engagement with the environment.
What excites me about visual sociology is the opportunity to embrace alternative ways of telling that not only expand sociological concepts but also encourage broader engagement and debate within our visually aware world.
